Is it ok to substitute applesauce for the eggs in brownie mix?
Q. I heard you could substitute applesauce for eggs. Is this true? If so, how much applesauce would I need per number of eggs? oh yeah, and it's brownie mix from a box, so would I still use the same amount of water and oil?

A. I've substituted applesauce for eggs in a lot of my recipes. I usually use them in pancakes. It works quite well and gives a bit of a sweet flavor. I've never used it in a brownie mix before, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. I usually use about 1/4 cup of applesauce per egg. I've only found one negativity with this substitution. It seems to make the food somewhat soft or gooey, if you will. Eggs hold the mixture together once it is baked; applesauce does this as well, but not as strongly. And yes, I believe you would still use the same amount of the other ingredients as well. Hope this helps.

In a sugar cookies recipe, if I substitute applesauce for butter will the taste change?
Q. Applesauce is the only substitute I could come up with so will the taste/flavor of the sugar cookies be different?(better/worse.)
Asked by chichi842 - Fri Jan 9 21:53:27 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Unfortunately it will not work because butter has that certain texture and saltiness to it for the recipe. If you have margarine you can use that or if you can canola oil you can use that too

I want to substitute applesauce for eggs in a cake mix?
Q. The recipe calls for 3 eggs, 1 1/4 cups of water, and 1/2 cup oil, plus the cake mix. I know I can sub applesauce for the eggs, but how much should I use?
Asked by cristennamarie - Tue May 15 21:21:13 2007 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Usually you substitute applesauce for the vegetable oil in the recipe, not the eggs. You could grind 3 tablespoons of flax seeds in the blender with 3/4 cup of water to make egg substitute (blend until jelly like, don't use in white cake, it has flecks). Each large egg has about 1/4 cup of liquid, if you can run 3/4 of tofu in the blender with the water needed for the recipe, that would turn out ok... Sorry, I don't know what you have on hand to use. Vegans use a product called egg replacer that is made from potato starch and tapioca flour.

A. Yes, BUT... I do this on a regular basis with my waffle iron...My daughter LOVES waffles on Saturday morning...Several years ago, I was traveling for business and the Hotel where I was at had a Belgian Waffle Iron in the Breakfast area...The batter was in pre-mixed 6 oz. cups...You poured the batter QUICKLY into the Iron, closed it and ROTATED the Iron 180 degrees...It had an automatic timer, when it beeped, take the 7" Waffle out quickly and eat it hot...Dependably crunchy on the outside, light and fluffy inside... After about 4 days of this at a Hotel, I asked the friendly hostess where to BUY a Waffle Iron like this...She scooted it out to look at the backside, sure enough, there was an 800 number...I wrote it down and called them.… [cont.]

Can I substitute applesauce for sugar?
Q. ...in baking recipes, like cookies, muffins, cakes? Is it an even substitution?
Asked by guerita - Thu Mar 27 22:44:32 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You absolutely can use applesauce for OIL - not sugar. You can do this in almost any baked treats, but I wouldn't reccomend in cookies. Muffins and cakes will turn out awesome. Also, it doesn't even have to be sweetend applesauce. I buy the unsweetened and use that and you can never tell a difference; it's just healthier. If you are looking for a sugar replacement, use splenda.

Why do some recipes substitute applesauce for vegetable oil?
Q. What are the different effects, especially in baking?
Asked by Sweet Babu - Thu Dec 25 10:33:13 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Applesauce is used in place of vegetable oil in recipes to reduce the fat and calories because it keeps the baked product moist. In baking it's not quite the same texture, things are a little chewier without the added fat, but usually it's still very good.

Applesauce lowfat substitute for cakes?
Q. Does anyone have the conversions to use applesauce instead of sugar to make sweets less fattening?
Asked by JENNIFER K - Thu Nov 16 23:11:26 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Applesauce replaces the oil that goes in the dough. Applesauce adds moisture that the oil was meant to add. They say no sugar is needed afterward, but this is much less sweet, IMO. It's an acquired taste, and let's face it, how much pastry would you have to eat before you lost wieght? Splenda, BTW, is created when poisonous chlorine is passed through sugar, creating the infamously toxic dioxin, which collects in your organs. There are wierd stories for every artificial thing, not that you'll ever notice the difference.

Can you substitute pumpkin puree for applesauce in muffin recipe?
Q. This recipe is low-fat; it has only a few spoonfuls of oil. It calls for 1 c. pumpkin puree and 2 c. applesauce. Think it would be okay to use 3 c. of pumpkin and leave out the applesauce? All I have in the house is pumpkin. These are pumpkin spice muffins, by the way.

A. They come out too dense...I've tried the same thing for the exact same reason...hey...what if you thinned the puree with a little water until it was applesauce texture...shoot, I should have thought of that then...

A. The best substitution would be applesauce. It's healthful and low in fat. 3/4 to 1 cup of applesauce can be substituted for 1 cup of oil or butter. You can also substitute (drained) crushed pineapple, bananas (mashed), and even fruit butters, such as apple or pear for oil or butter.

Substituting oil with applesauce in cake mix?
Q. I am making a cake for a friend's birthday, however she just got out of the hospital and is on a very low fat diet. I would like to substitute applesauce for oil that the recipe calls for... is that possible? I do it for brownies quite often, but my other friend said that in cakes it can make the texture kind of "off". I am just using a Duncan Hines Moist Deluxe Golden Yellow cake mix from the box. Has anyone ever done this before? What was the result? Thanks.
Asked by Annie - Thu Jul 17 13:16:49 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I agree with Happy Cooker - if your friend is on a low fat diet an Angel Food cake topped with fresh fruit would be the best choice as there is no fat in an Angel Food cake. Barring that, you could always make her a Birthday fruit pie with fresh strawberries, cherries or apples. WA

Bananas Or Applesauce for a substitute for eggs?

A. You can use applesauce or a banana. I use a little more than a tablespoon of applesauce per egg needed. I think it makes the cake a little more dense and moist. If you use bananas, use 1 banana for 1 egg and give them a good mashing before adding to your cake mix. You're basically just replacing the eggs as a binder. You probably won't get a very fluffy cake if you don't use eggs though. Good luck!

You'll want to increase liquid or . applesauce. for moisture. You might want to try 2/3 to 1/3 ratio or even 1/2 and 1/2. Experiment until you feel comfortable with the finished product. Aug 1st 2010 13:08 by Manik ...
