The common oat (Avena sativa) is a species of cereal grain grown for its seed, which is known by the same name (usually in the plural, unlike other grains). While oats are suitable for human consumption as oatmeal and rolled oats, one of the most common uses is as livestock feed. Oats make up a large part of the diet of horses and are regularly fed to cattle as well. Oats are also used in some brands of dog and chicken feed. OriginThe wild ancestor of Avena sativa and the closely related minor crop, A. byzantina, is the hexaploid wild oat A. sterilis. Genetic evidence shows that the ancestral forms of A. sterilis grow in the Fertile Crescent of the Near East. Domesticated oats appear relatively late, and far from the Near East, in Bronze Age Europe. Oats, like rye, are usually considered a secondary crop, i.e. derived from a weed of the primary cereal domesticates wheat and barley. As these cereals spread westwards into cooler, wetter areas, this may have favoured the oat weed component, leading to its eventual domestication. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Is it possible to eat too many oats? Q. I really love oats and since giving up smoking I find myself probably overindulging in them - I've been telling myself it's better than chocolate - however, I am eating a lot - e.g. I would eat half a box of Nairns rough oat cakes a day, plus a bowl of porridge (oatabix) and an assortment of oat type sweet biscuits - with limited sugar. I also love wholemeal bread and would eat maybe 6 slices of this a day as well. I do eat plenty of fruit vegetables and proteins too ...apart from the possibility of putting on weight, is there any harm in eating lots (and lots) of oaty things? Yep! no matter how good something is too much can be harmful. eg: too little or no roughage will cause constipation and too much will cause diarrhea so you have to try and balance your diet. Answered by Anthony B - Thu Sep 20 05:17:16 2007 Can I substitute regular rolled oats for quick cook oats in a cookie recipe? Q. Every oatmeal cookie recipe that I've come across calls for quick oats. What will be the outcome of my cookies if I use the regular oats instead? Is there really that much difference between the two? Other than cook time, I mean. Asked by avrilmai - Wed Aug 9 14:12:16 2006 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments A. The quick cooking oats are thinner and break apart more easily causing recipes to be drier because of the fine oat flour. The old fashioned oats are thicker and should be added at the end of the ingredients and hand stirred into the dough to keep the oats from breaking apart. You can see the oats in this recipe vs using the quick cooking oats. I have a special container just for old fashioned oats for baking cookies with. I also add Craisins (dried cranberries) instead of raisins. Both types of oats work in your cookies but you will get less volume of oats if you use old fashioned oats due to whole grains vs thinner and powdery quick cooking. Answered by Kamikazea? Kid - Wed Aug 9 14:24:37 2006 Anybody know the recipe for the cookies at Wild Oats?
Q. I got some fabulous cookies at Wild Oats. I can't remember exactly what they were called, but something about "everything" or something like that. They have a lot of different things in them like coconut, raisins, cranberries, chocolate chips, etc., etc., etc. There is also a very similar one that has similar things in it, but seems to have some oats in it too. That one is really good as well! Does anyone know how to make these? They are a really heavy, but moist cookie -- just wonderful. I don't mind buying them all the time, it is just that I live like 150 miles from the nearest Wild Oats, so it isn't exactly practical to buy them regularly. If you could give me this recipe(s) I would love it!! Thank you. Asked by animal lover - Tue Jun 5 18:47:01 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Most places like that make their cookies from frozen dough balls shipped in from their distibuter. If you can not find the correect recipe, try asking them if it would be possible to buy a bag of frozen cookie dough balls. Im a fanatic for subways cookies and they sell the dough balls in bags of 30 for $6. So try that. Good luck getting your recipe though!
