What type of homemade foods should you avoid while pregnant?
Q. I know to avoid homemade ice cream, and mayo. Is homemade banana nut bread one you should avoid?
Asked by Ava - Sun Feb 22 20:04:37 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The reason you want to avoid homemade ice cream and homemade mayo is because of the raw eggs in it. Avoid anything with raw eggs, undercooked or raw meat or soft cheese. For example: cesar salad, sushi, smoked salmon, anything with feta or bleu cheese, etc.

What homemade remedy can I use to keep the animals off of the furniture?
Q. My grandma has me finding this spray she calls "cat and dog off." Its supposed to help keep animals off of the furniture but i can't find anything along that line in the store. Does anyone know what she is talking about? Or any homemade solutions for this problem?
Asked by lonelychickensarenteverthesame - Mon Nov 19 16:17:25 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Get a spray bottle and every time the cat or dog gets on the furniture you give it a spray of water in the face. They will soon get the message. It does work and doesn't hurt the animal.

Has anyone made any homemade flour tortillas lately?
Q. Has anyone made any homemade tortillas lately, particularly one who asked me for a recipe (you know who you are, lol)? No, seriously, to everybody, how often do you make them, and what are the different ways, if any, that other people like to make their homemade tortillas?

A. Well I made them, and I'm hooked. They were more square than round but they sure were good :) From now on, I'll definately be making them instead of buying them. Thanks.

How do you make homemade dog food?
Q. I am pretty satisfied with commercial dog food and I have no problem sticking with it, but I would just like to know how to make nutritional homemade dog food. My dogs are a golden retriever, beagle, and dachshund if that information is needed. I would like advice also, like what supplements to put in the food, and the right portions, and a professional website would be the best. I don't really want just homemade dog food that isn't any better than commercial dog food. Please help out. Thanks.

A. Do not feed your dog bones, especially cooked bones. Fragments can become lodged in the digestive tract. Canines in the wild who eat bones have the benefit of consuming hair and hide too, which have been found to pad the bone fragments and aid in their passing. Other foods to avoid that are dangerous for dogs are chocolate, avocados, mushrooms, macadamia nuts, grapes, raisins, onions, and garlic. Try one of these easy dog food recipes and watch your pup smile.

Why is my homemade popcorn is hard and tough to bite through, how do I make softer popcorn?
Q. I just made homemade popcorn for the 2nd time using a pot on the stove. It is hard to bite through and some of them have a really hard center. Am I doing something wrong? Maybe using too much oil? Thanks!
Asked by CW - Wed Jun 10 13:45:15 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Use 1/3 cup popcorn to 2 tbsp oil (olive oil is preferred). Cook the popcorn on MEDIUM heat only! Let a little of the steam to escape, and shake continuously when you start hearing popping. The best thing to do is to get the Wabash Valley Whirley-Pop Stovetop Popcorn Popper. I have this, and I LOVE it. Perfect popcorn every time, and no widows or orphans!

Q. I want to make some homemade caesar salad dressing to use on my fresh from the garden romaine lettuce, but I'm only going to need two servings of salad at a time as I'm only making this for my husband and me. If I go ahead and make a full recipe of dressing, how long will it keep in the refrigerator? I've chosen a recipe from a cookbook, but if you have a favorite - please share!

How long can homemade pasta sauce keep in the refrigerator?
Q. I received a gift of homemade pasta sauce (with vegetables in it) and keep it in the refrigerator. How long can it be kept safely in there before I would need to throw it away? Thank you.
Asked by Nancy - Tue Feb 17 01:32:43 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A general safety rule for any food is 7 to 10 days in the fridge. Pasta sauce does very well in the freezer too, about 8 to 12 month before freezer burn sets in. I wouldn't jar it, then store in your pantry... I just don't trust that idea, unless it is vacuum packed sealed and sanitized.

How long do homemade pie crusts last in the freezer?
Q. Nothing is better than a homemade pie crust, but sometimes I need one quickly and do not have the time to start from scratch. I was thinking about making several and freezing them, than when I am in need of a crust, I would just thaw and roll. I thought this would also be good for around the holidays, when I am baking several pies. I'm not sure if this would affect the outcome of the crust. Does anyone do this? Do you store them in a freezer bag or a plastic container? If so, how long do they generally last?
Asked by frogsrgr8t - Fri Aug 10 20:09:48 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you wrap it well in plastic and foil, it should last 6 months in the deep freeze. Maybe 2-3 months in a regular freezer.

How long will homemade canned apple sauce stay good for?
Q. My grandma cans all sorts of things. She recently gave me some of her homemade canned apple sauce. The label says it was made in 06. I was just curious how long it would last if its in a canning jar and has never been opened.

A. It can keep well over 5 years as long as the seal is intact. Ah, the beauty of canning. It is in fact canned in STERILE jars and the vacuum seal is nearly perfect. Do not listen to the previous answer. Your grandmother would not try to hurt you.

How long does homemade potato salad last in the refrigerator?
Q. Just curious because I've eaten homemade potato salad that was in the fridge for more than maybe 2 weeks I think.. I mean it didn't look or taste bad. I only threw the salad away when mold started growing on it. So, mainly, is something still good to eat as long as it doesn't show any signs of spoilage?
Asked by Th3Cube - Wed Feb 25 00:19:59 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. usually everthing has its self life and it is known that nothing is good to eat as good as fresh food, but obvious things which are not fresh will not give the same taste, nutrition which you will get by fresh food I advice not to go for for refrigirated food for more than 2-3 days if 4-10 digree celcius we cannot see the bad effect of food with naked eyes so if food looking and tasting normal does'nt mean it is normal, if you want to eat also take precaution boil it for 1 minute atleast or microwave for more than 100 degree

How long is homemade biscotti good for?
Q. I want to make homemade biscotti as part of my family Christmas gifts this year. How soon can I make it? Is it okay to freeze it? We may be getting some icy weather this weekend and it would be nice to stay inside and bake. Can I make it this early?
Asked by coulbean - Thu Nov 29 18:59:33 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Biscotti are about the best thing you can bake in advance for gift-giving. They keep at least a week at room temperature if well wrapped up, and they freeze beautifully for at least a couple of months. (If you're going to dip them in chocolate or anything, I wouldn't do that before freezing.) Plus they're sturdy, so they won't turn to dust if you send them by mail. I don't find that the type of fat you use makes any difference to how well they keep; I always stick to butter because it tastes best. Baking biscotti when it's icy outside sounds great--have fun.

How to make a homemade Goldilocks costume?
Q. I don't want to buy one of those expensive costumes, so how can I make a homemade goldilocks costume? I already have blond hair, so I don't need a wig.
Asked by Lauren M - Sun Oct 18 15:36:25 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you don't know how to sew, you can buy a gingham printed dress for less than half of what some of the costumes go for. Target has some and there is one at Macy's here: After this you can buy a white apron at a craft store like Michael's or AC Moore or maybe you have one at home or one of your friends does. On the apron you can make a little bear out of felt or construction paper (3 circles for head and ears and make a face on it) and glue/pin it on the apron. You can also adorn the apron with ribbon or lace on the edges to dress it up. You can put the extra ribbon in your hair and maybe draw on freckles with brown eyeliner. Good luck!

What are some good homemade dog food recipes?
Q. I'm plannning on gradually switching my two dogs to a homemade diet, does anybody have any good links to recipes and nutritional info? Or your own recipes? Thanks!
Asked by Ally - Sun Jun 1 13:08:45 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I agree with Mia C - you need to know what you're doing when you feed home-made. My dogs have been on home-made for about 9 months now and are thriving on it. There's an excellent book out for anyone interested in feeding home-made (with raw meat) - Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats. It's got lots of recipes, as well as all the additives you need and what each one is for. If you decide to feed home-made, you're responsible for making sure your dog gets a complete diet. This book will make sure you're giving him that. It has a lot more info on dog care than nutrition, that's just the best reason to get this book.

Can anyone recommend a homemade, organic and safe alternative to Confidor?
Q. I have a major sooty mould problem which has spread to three somewhat concealed plants during winter. They are located in a somewhat damp spot which does not have all day sun and are shaded by some older gums (very tall). I am reluctant to simply cut them out due to privacy concerns and would prefer to try treating them first. If you are able to suggest a homemade product, could you say how to make it or where I might find the recipe! I am in western Sydney, Australia. Thanks so much!

A. Sooty mold is a mold that grows on the honeydew of sap sucking insects like aphids, mealybugs, scale, and whiteflies. Control the insects and you control the sooty mold. The honeydew drops from the insects to the leaves and twigs. Wind-blown sooty mold spores that stick to the honeydew then have a suitable medium for growth. When spores germinate, they send out black fungal strands (mycelial threads) that cover the plant tissue and cause the discoloration. You can wash the sooty mold off plants with water, but unless the insects are controlled, it will reappear. If they are aphids, a direct spray of water will often times remove them. Insecticdal soaps can also control most soft bodied insects. Liquid dish soaps can work, but some soaps… [cont.]
