Who actually has a 30g portion of cereal for breakfast?
Q. Hey guys, I think its slightly ridiculous that they recommend you eat a 30g portion of cereal in the morning. One day I measured it and it took me about 3 or 4 mouthfuls to finish... Now I am rather tall (about 6 feet) and have normally 100g of cereal a day and thats enough then. Just curious really to see if people actually only have 30g of cereal.

A. I think people really misunderstand the nutritional labels. The serving does NOT tell you how much to eat. Rather, it's an exchange unit that satisfies one unit per serving in the food pyramid. For example, I may eat three servings of corn flakes. That means not that I've been a hog who ate three times what I should, but rather, that I've satisfied three of my daily grain units. Also, as you may have guessed, yes, the USDA sets what is a food serving. Without a uniform system, the Pyramid would make even less sense than it already does.

What's the difference between rice cereal and oatmeal cereal?
Q. I keep reading (and yes I believe) that rice cereal doesn't offer much nutritionally for babies. Is the same true for oatmeal cereal? Are there any differences that make it any better, or is it just the same? Thanks! Oh, I'm not really considering giving either to my baby. He did great at acknowledging that both tasted gross, and would rather eat his fruit chunks and pasta. I'm just wondering about the difference between the two.

A. It's just a different grain that's being processed to death. Best thing to do if you want to give your baby cereal is to just make it yourself. Proper oatmeal is fine for babies; I like the 'steel-cut' type of oats myself... "Cereal is not at all necessary, particularly the baby cereals. Regular (whole grain) oatmeal is more nutritious for your baby..." "Have you checked out the taste and texture of commercial baby cereal? Pour some commercial rice cereal in a bowl. It has no smell. The taste is the very definition of bland. The cereal is made from refined rice that has been processed and precooked. Refined grains have nothing to offer but carbohydrates. Whole grains, on the other hand, contain not only carbohydrates but also protein,… [cont.]

A. We started at about 5 1/2 months old with our twins. We did a few spoons of rice cereal mixed with formula at night. We did it about an hour before their last bottle of the day. We did this for a few weeks. At 6 months, we added a few spoonfuls (about 1/2 a jar) of veggies to the rice cereal. We started with sweet potatoes, then green beans, squash, peas, carrots . . . alternating our orange and green vegetables. We also stayed with the same vegetable for 3 - 4 days to be sure that there was not an allergic reaction. Our pediatrician actually told us to start with vegetables. Not all kids, but some kids, do not like the vegetables once they have acquired a taste for the sweet fruits. After getting through the vegetables and… [cont.]

When and how do I start my baby on cereal?
Q. When should I start my 4 1/2 month old on baby cereal? He's now half breastmilk (I pump) fed and half formula fed. What age did you start your baby on cereal? And how do I go about starting him on it. What type or brand should I use? He now has 4 oz of breastmilk (or formula) about every 3 hours during the day, 4 hours at night. He's gaining weight just fine on what he's eating now, he's more than 15 pounds. Do I start with only the cereal, when do I start giving him the jar baby food? Thanks for your suggestions and help.

A. I was by the book, and I started my daughter at 4 months. I fed her according to the instructions on the box. Her fathers family all suggested I put the cereal in her bottle, because it would help her sleep better. My baby slept fine without it. I disagree with putting cereal in a bottle, because baby will soon be eating baby food (6 months) with a spoon, and if it's always in a bottle, they will get a late start on the concept of a spoon. You can also overfeed a baby that way. When you do start him on regular baby food, start with a veggie, and stick with the same food for 4-5 days at a time, before introducing a new one.

When do you start giving your baby cereal if you are breastfeeding?
Q. Do you just feed him the cereal plain or do you pump and make a bottle adding in the cereal? And at what age do you start this?
Asked by xoxo - knm - Sun Mar 1 10:04:21 2009 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Don't bother putting it in a bottle, if you are starting solid foods you might as well use a spoon. The recommendation used to be 4 months, but now they say it is better to wait 6 months for the baby's digestive system to be ready. Some people won't wait that long, but at least wait 4 months. Breastmilk is all the nutrients your baby needs so don't worry about rushing to give baby solids. When you make the cereal you can either pump a little breastmilk into a bowl, use a little formula (if you have it), use water, or if the baby has drank juice before use a little juice to mix with the cereal. Good luck.

When should I start feeding my baby cereal?
Q. My 41/2 month old son has been breast feed since birth. He has always been a great sleeper until the last week or two. He has started waking up every 3 to 4 hours wanting to eat. As you can imagine it is getting old and I am exhausted. My husband thinks we should feed him cereal. We started feeding my oldest son cereal at 4 months but he was a pretty big eater and was a big boy. My youngest isn't quite that way. He is still in the 75 percentile for his weight and height but I don't know if that even matters. Any suggestions.

A. It's not advisable to start at 4 months. It's better to wait until 6 months. Doctors sometimes okay solids at 4 months because the parents are getting impatient, but it's better to hold off for a little while longer. There are no benefits to starting at 4 months...but there are increased risks, such as choking, allergies, obesity, and diabetes. The risks are low, but there's no point in starting now really. I'd wait until 6 months. I started my first at 4 months because the doctor said it would help with her reflux. It didn't. It just made her spit up in different colors, so I stopped the solids and reintroduced them around 6 months. Your son waking every 3-4 hours to nurse is totally normal. Since it's a change from how he used to… [cont.]

A. My college age son just called me last night to give me a very "college student age appropriate" observation about just this topic. He was very excited to learn that those little bugs that eventually get into open and exposed cereal boxes will float to the top after you add milk. He advised me to wait about 30 seconds after adding milk before eating, and then do a quick surface bug check before taking that first bite. For mom's out there, try not to throw up, for college students out there - i think this was a very helpful (although insanely gross) tip. PS - he's in medical school... it would seem college kids are all the same, the world over :) As far as avoiding this altogether, go to the 99 cent store or "big lots" and pick up a… [cont.]

How much cereal did you feed your baby at first?
Q. My daughter is 5 months old and we have tried cereal for a few nights now. She seems to really enjoy it. Now, I just need to figure out how much I can give her. She still seem interested after having a tablespoon. We're trying to take it slow because she has had some digestive issues in the past. How much is OK to give? Also, when did you add a second cereal feeding? Thanks!
Asked by proudmom77 - Fri Jun 19 15:46:44 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I started with less than a teaspoon. I added a second meal after a week or two, offering other foods. If your baby is still hungry after a tablespoon, that might suggest that you need to increase her intake of breastmilk or formula. (Solids should be given only after the milk, so baby shouldnt' be too hungry at that point.) Given your baby's digestive issues, I'd be pretty cautious. Ideally I'd stick with breastmilk/formula alone for another month or two. If you must give solids, go slowly. And I don't think I'd add a second feeding of cereal. Cereal is pretty much empty starch -- little taste, little nutrition, and quite constipating. If she seems to want more solids, I'd try fruits or veggies at the second meal.

Q. When did you start putting baby cereal in your baby's bottles?
Asked by Lily's Mommy - Tue Oct 27 19:59:34 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. if you are thinking of adding cereal to your babies diet to get her to sleep longer or to not be so hungry, it doesn't work. Just feed her more formula or nurse her more often. Cereal is primarily carbohydrates and digests much faster than milk does which is a protien product so you will be fiddling around with a mess that will not do what you expect it to at all. Solid foods can be introduced at 5-6 months old. Earlier than that and you run the risk of increased allergy problems, especially if it runs in your family. I know. I have a red headed child that I did that to(my first, I didn't know any better) and now she is 36 and swear to God, allergic to everything.

When did you start your baby on rice cereal?
Q. I was just wondering how early it's ok to start a baby on rice cereal. It just seems like my baby won't drink a lot of formula at one time and just doesn't want anymore and then falls asleep and is hungry again in less than 1/2 an hour. I read the directions on rice cereal but was a little confused. Do I just make the # of ounces of formula he normally eats and then mix in the cereal or should I use less formula if I'm adding the cereal? And did the rice cereal seem to upset your babies' tummies?
Asked by Blake & Kayla's mom - Sat Apr 19 14:31:12 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You have to use the motherly skills now. You know the milk is not filling the little one up. Now is the time to give the rice cereal. The doctors may say no the baby is to young. So you have to use your own judgment. I used Rice cereal for all four of my boys one week after being home. When doing this you are only putting in a little at first. you want to watch for constipation or poo movement if its does not bather the baby you can add a bit more. Just start a little at a time and do it at your will. But it is safe long as done with caution. Have you asked your mom or ant with children?

A. was told by my nurse to start out with a tablespoon in the morning, mixed with formula or breast milk (whichever you've been using) and start out with it very runny, and gradually make it thicker. Work your way up to 2-3 tablespoons or so- give the baby however much they want. After a couple of weeks give them the same around supper time. NO- it won't make your baby sleep longer and no matter how many people give you this advice- do not give rice cereal in a bottle- choking hazard, and it doesn't work. Baby will sleep through the night when they are ready to.

A. This is normal. Beleive it or not she is getting some of the cereal into her tummy. But it is a new sensation, it doesn't feel like milk/formula from a bottle. Infants don't do very many things like adults do and one of them is eating. Just "scrape" off what comes out back onto the spoon and put it in her mouth.
