Cake is a form of food that is usually sweet and often baked. Cakes normally combine some kind of flour, a sweetening agent (commonly sugar), a binding agent (generally egg, though gluten or starch are often used by lacto-vegetarians and vegans), fats (usually butter, shortening, or margarine, although a fruit purée such as applesauce is sometimes substituted to avoid using fat), a liquid (milk, water or fruit juice), flavors and some form of leavening agent (such as yeast or baking powder), though many cakes lack these ingredients and instead rely on air bubbles in the dough to expand and cause the cake to rise. Cake is often frosted with buttercream or marzipan, and finished with piped borders and crystallized fruit. Cake is often the dessert of choice for meals at ceremonial occasions, particularly weddings, anniversaries, and birthdays. There are countless cake recipes; some are bread-like, some rich and elaborate and many are centuries old. Cake making is no longer a complicated procedure; while at one time considerable labor went into cake making (particularly the whisking of egg foams), baking equipment and directions have been simplified that even the most amateur cook may bake a cake. Q. This is the second time I have made a cake and after putting the frosting on and covering in a cake holder a few minutes later I look and the cake is split down the middle. The cakes have been slightly warm this time the frosting was room temp. The first time the frosting was warm and so was the cake. Also the first cake was 3 layers and this time it was 2 layers. The first cake was a home made german chocolate I have made it a few times since doing the same and it didn't crack. Asked by Michelle - Sun Jan 6 00:57:41 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. As others have told you, your cake layers need to be stone cold before you try to frost them. They may also not be level. If you are trying to work with layers that are pretty humped in the middle, stacking one on top of the other will cause the top layer to break in half. Try to make your layers more even or use a long, thin bread knife to even them off before you frost them. (Put the cut side down or you will never get the frosting on crumb free!) Answered by livsgrandma - Sun Jan 6 01:10:48 2008 Is it possible to give a white cake mix a vanilla flavor? Q. I need to make a vanilla cake with vanilla frosting. Where I went, they had a yellow cake mix and a white cake mix. The person I'm making the cake for said she prefered the white cake mix but I know that she is picky and likes vanilla. Is it ok to add a little vanilla to the cake mix? If so, about how much? Cool. Thank you. I will do that. Asked by Sahara - Thu Apr 10 08:48:29 2008 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments A. The addition of vanilla should work fine, but be sure to put it in the measure cup *before* you add the water to measure. That way you don't throw off the amount of liquid required. Also, if you're starting with the white mix, then try to use clear vanilla to keep the cake looking white. You can get clear vanilla is most crafts stores but a few markets carry it as well. Answered by Vic - Thu Apr 10 09:01:38 2008 What does the addition of sour cream DO to cake batter?
Q. I've seen several recipes for homemade vanilla cakes with sour cream in the batter. I know that sour cream is often an ingredient in coffee cakes, but I'd like to make a moist, lighter birthday cake, not a coffee cake. Are cakes with sour cream automatically dense coffee cakes? What is a cake made with sour cream like? Asked by gfaithd - Fri Nov 16 03:03:46 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Yep sour cream will make a cake more moist and dense. It will keep better too. You want to look for a genoise sponge or Victoria sponge recipe if you want a light cake. Otehrwise just a simple butter cake (easier than a sponge) Answered by jess b - Fri Nov 16 03:11:38 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Cake" |
