How many ounces of crushed graham crackers are equal to 16 whole graham crackers?
Q. I have a recipe that calls for 16 whole graham crackers, crushed & I only have a box of pre-crushed graham crackers. How many ounces (or cups) of the crushed do I need to use?
Asked by K - Tue Jul 28 13:51:00 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. 9 crushed equal 1 1/4 cups. The ones you have are probably very fine, so I would use 2 cups of what you have. If you are making a topping of some sort or a crust and mixing with butter, you will need a consistency to mold, so you may need to add additional butter if 2 cups is too much, but I think that will be about right, maybe 2 1/4 cups.

A. I'm a big fan of Carr's Water Crackers with wine and cheese. They have a very mild flavor and let the cheese be the star. You can either buy the assortment: (This one is specifically for cheeses) or several varieties. My personal favorite are the Cracked Pepper variety: (Great with Boursin -- which is my favorite kind of cheese!) It would also be a good idea to have the plain variety: for the stronger cheeses. There are several other flavors as well: so you can pick and choose what would go best with the cheeses you're serving. You can buy them online here: but most specialty grocery stores (like Central Market) carry them -- and many larger supermarkets should have them too.

Q. Why do they put holes in crackers?

A. It is called "docking". This is to keep the cracker from puffing up during the baking process. It is also a help to release moisture, making the cracker crisp.

Why do Gerber Graduates teething biscuits and crackers say they are for toddlers only?
Q. All the development books, articles, etc say that babies should be able to feed themselves a cracker by 7 months, but all the baby crackers (Gerber Graduates, etc) say they are for crawlers and toddlers only. My son is 7 months today and can't crawl, but he certainly seems able to feed himself a cracker! Are these things safe for him if I let him eat them only in his high chair and supervise him? Thanks!
Asked by Jill P - Fri May 1 11:11:10 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I agree, what a silly way to classify things. Some babies are late crawlers, some babies are early ones, and it is unrelated to their ability to eat any given food. I have read in several places (for example, that you should wait until 8-10 months to offer crackers, at least partly because of the wheat content and the allergy potential. However, many people give them earlier with no problems. They can also be a choking hazard, but obviously you are planning on supervising him. So I would say yes, it is safe for him to eat them.

Can the honey in graham crackers harm a 9 month old?
Q. I found out that my 9 month old son's daycare gave him graham crackers because they thought I didn't bring enough food for him. I don't know if they were the ones with honey or not, but I told them not to feed him anything that I didn't bring for him. He just got over a bad stomach virus for which he was hospitalized for a night, then I found out about the graham crackers. Then, a couple days later, one of the staff grossly overfed him because she misread his cues and he got very sick again for several hours. I have had a hard time calming his tummy. I am already looking for a new daycare, but I wanted to know if people thought that the honey could have messed up his tummy. He has had terrible gas for the past several days, as well.

A. Unless the baby is fed globs of honey, I was told by my son's doc that it is ok. Also since it is baked into the crackers there is close to none risk of honey being the culprit. I would think that the gas was due to the fiber in the crackers (which he may not be able to handle well now) and not the honey. It could be a result of the stomach virus that he had, or even from the over eating. Again, I am sure that it could be from the fiber more than from the honey.

Mix in a drained can of chopped fine fruit cocktail. Take red cherries out and put aside. Form mixture into a ball form. Cover with chopped pineapple decorate with cherries. Let refridgerate overnight and serve with ritz crackers. You can always use a can of lite fruit cocktail and 1/3 less fat cream cheese. It will still taste very yummy

A. In Australia you can get whats called Trilogy cheese. It have 3 different flavoured cheeses in one. Your best bet would be to choose a cheese platter, they sell them prepackaged or you could also ask the deli counter. For crackers, choose something simple like Jatz.

A. They have mineral salt spools that you can offer your bunny to be sure that his salt intake is adequate. He may however just really like the saltines. I have a cat that oddly enough loves cantaloupe and goes bonkers with anticipation when I cut it. Just remember that treats are just that a treat not a part of the typical diet.
